“Mommy, jump, too!” she said as she pulled my hand.
It was rainy for a while today, and forced to retreat inside for a bit, my daughter found a piece of bubble wrap from a freshly delivered package. Always one to make her own fun, she began to jump on it as I laughed.
I sat and watched her for a few minutes before she reached down and grabbed my hand and said “Mommy, jump, too!” And so I did and we danced and jumped and it was a perfect three minutes of my day.
In life with a very busy and often trying toddler, these moments really make me stop and remember that this is the little girl who makes me laugh and whose sense of adventure–even so very young–pushed me further on my own journey.
Her father’s daughter, through and through, this little girl has reminded me that I can jump too–just like her dad has shown me. The lessons I learn from her each and every day always seem to be about having fun, being light-hearted, and letting go of perfection. She’s taught me so very much and today, our little dance on bubble wrap was a metaphor, personified in real life.
On the eve of her second birthday, we jumped and danced and as I watched her giggle, all I could think was “thank you.” She might not always be an easy child to parent (who is?!), but she is so very easy to adore. And I simply adore her. And how lucky am I that I am her mother.
Thanks for Mothering the Divide with me as I celebrate the everyday moments–all mundane and so very simple–but moments that make the life I hope my kids remember. We all have these moments, my friends. We just need to take the time to realize that these are the moments to focus on. So, dance on bubblewrap tonight for me? Grab a hand and dance away.
